TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Early into 2019 social media users are witnessing yet another trend known by its '10 Years Challenge' hashtag, which mainly compares a user’s portrait side-by-side that is 10 years apart. Local public figures up to international celebrities are joining in the trend as of now.
Up to January 18, there are millions of posts combined, tagged under #10YearsChallenge across popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and video-based social platform Youtube.
Not only people, technology and social media platforms also underwent changes in the past ten-year period. Here are the notable changes of 3 social media platforms throughout the past decade:
1. Facebook (2004 – now)
The Facebook logo underwent a minor change in its 'a' letter.
The most notable social media site founded 14 years ago in 2004 has over 2.2 billion active users in 2018 according to Statista.com. Many things have changed in the years that followed, such as when the social media company giant expanded its business and introduced the Facebook Messenger.
A Compete.com study done in January 2009 ranked Facebook the most used social networking service by worldwide monthly active users. A fact that is able to be maintained until 2019.
2. Youtube (2005 – now)
The major change of the Youtube logo.
This video-based social site went through many changes since 2009. Starting from 2013’s Google+ fiasco that saw its integration with Google’s social site, which basically forces its users to register a Google+ account, up to the monetization and demonetization policy changes that have created a dynamic within the website’s community. YouTube has over 1.9 billion active users according to Statista.com.
3. Twitter (2006 – now)
The old Twitter logo compared to the latest iteration.
The social media platform was known for its quick-natured sharing ability that was limited to 140-character, which was aimed for its SMS messaging compatibility at the time. This drove the birth of many slang words that also changed the nature of how people shorten texts. Statista.com reports that Twitter has at least 335,000,000 active users until the end of 2018.
